Fulbourn Sports won a tense game at Exning United in an opening day battle of newly promoted sides. In one of only two games played on the opening day, both away teams won the spoils as two of the longest established sides in the league met in Sawston. However it was Keys who were caught short in the other game as Barnwell Rangers won on the opening day for the second season in a row. Only two games were played at the same point last season and both then were won by the away teams and by the same scores. Barnwell top the table such as it stands, but Fulbourn Sports were impressive at Exning, always a tough place to go and get a result, as they held on to win the game 2-1. In a fractious game that threatened to really boil over several times, both sides put plenty of endeavour into a game of few chances. Sports had the upper hand throughout the first half and established a two goal lead but in the second half, as the game became ever more feisty, Exning pulled a goal back from a deflected free kick to leave a tense last twenty minutes. Both sides had half chances to score again but Sports held firm to get their season off to a good start and gain the win that will surely see them present Magpies with a very stiff test the following Sunday. Rumours at the game suggested that Aaron Maskell might be lining up for Sports against Magpies, adding just a little more spice to an encounter that both sides will surely be looking forward to. Magpies of course had no game on the bank holiday Sunday after Ashwell made a late decision to call it off a few weeks back, so Sports might be considered to have the edge having got their season going so well. But a year ago Magpies opened their season by hosting eventual champions Shelford Falcons after they had won their opening game at Coton a week earlier, and Magpies won that game 2-1.
Even so Magpies will be seen as underdogs for the game after performing so poorly last season but with new management and a number of new players, they will be hoping to bury the memory of their heavy pre-season defeat a year ago.
